A survey of representative British authors of the 19th and 20th centuries for both majors and non-majors.
ENGL 211: British Literature, Romanticism to Present (approved for D1)
Instructor: Lindsay Graham
Our class will survey the last two centuries of poetry and prose written by British authors, including Percy and Mary Shelley, Christina Rossetti, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, and A. S. Byatt. To help organize this material we will proceed chronologically from the Romantic and Victorian authors of the 19th century to the 20th and early 21st century expressions that they helped shape. As we travel through time, we will grapple with various concepts such as exploration and empire and will encounter imagined communities, alternative worlds, and dystopian dreams. Reading from a variety of genres (poetry, novels, short fiction, scientific essays, criticism, etc.), we will work to understand literary texts in their broader historical context and will ask questions of their relationship to the present. Approved for D1 credit.
