ENGL 211: British Literature Romanticism to the Present*
Instructor: Randi Mihajlovic
English Area of Specialization:
Literature & Literary History
Introduces students to key authors, texts, and genres as we survey the last two centuries of British literature, proceeding chronologically from the Romantics to the present. We will read a rich variety of material (poetry, novels, short fiction, essays, and visual art), including works by Mary Shelley, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Christina Rossetti, and Virginia Woolf. Our goal will be to understand these texts and the literary, historical, and cultural contexts that produced them and consider these texts in relationship to the present. In the process, students will gain interpretive and analytical skills and develop their understanding of—and appreciation for—the beauty, power, and relevance of literature."
