What is the Minor in English?
An English minor serves Rice undergraduates from all majors, sharpening thinking and writing in ways that support work in their respective disciplines. The English minor provides flexibility for students who wish to explore particular interests within British, American, and Anglophone literature and culture while still requiring some courses that guarantee exposure to a range of periods, genres, and methods of literary analysis.
Through courses that foreground language's role in shaping our perspectives, students will enhance their critical writing, reading, argumentation, and oral communication skills. In English courses, students develop competence in analyzing literary works, understand literature within its historical and socio-cultural contexts, and ponder ethical questions that address the inequities and disparities that shape our world. As writers, students will explore their imaginative potential through diverse projects that vary in length, genre, and medium.
