A bold new program in the heart of Houston.
The MFA in Creative Writing at Rice is a fully funded, three-year program rooted in literary excellence, artistic experimentation, and community engagement.
Our curriculum combines rigorous cross-genre literary training with place-based writing, artistic research, and professional development. Students work closely with award-winning faculty and community partners to develop original, ambitious creative work that responds to the urgencies of our time.
Distinctive features of the program include:
- Small, Selective Cohorts – admitted students receive full tuition and a competitive stipend.
- Place-Based and Public-Facing – Houston is both a subject and collaborator, offering opportunities for civic engagement, public storytelling, and deep cultural inquiry.
- Professional Breadth – our graduates are prepared for careers in teaching, publishing, public humanities, editing, advocacy, and the arts.
Join a new generation of writers committed to craft, community, and creative inquiry.
Applications are now open for the inaugural class of Fall 2026.
